This is when the exact wording of the topic has not been announced, but where its general subject area has already been revealed.
For example in 2001, the advised subject was “the ABC”. Some of the topics given under this subject heading were:
>
That advertising should be allowed on the ABC
> That the ABC needs more government funding
> That the ABC should be abolished
Remember that adding the word “not” so that the teams might be arguing for a different side can also change the meaning of the topics. So when you are preparing, whilst you will know that you are the Affirmative or Negative team, you still need to prepare each side of the topic.
The weeks before the debate is your time to go out and learn as much as you can about the subject area. You can take newspaper articles, print-outs from websites, books, magazines and any other useful material into the preparation room. Think about what the different issues are – this will help you get an idea for what the possible topics might be. The key here is preparation – the DAV isn’t trying to spring any surprises on anybody so if you do your homework you should be okay.
The Resource Guide should be helpful here – it contains links to useful websites that you can use as a starting point for your research. |
