About:
The DAV will be holding a tournament to give its adult members a chance to debate and adjudicate in debates beyond school-level. This tournament is designed to cater to all levels of debating experience.
When:
The tournament will be held over the weekend of Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th of May. It will run from around 9am - 5pm on both days. The schedule can be found below.
Where:
Melbourne Girls College, Yarra Blvd, Richmond
Format:
Debating will be held in 3-on-3 style with 6-8 minutes speeches, following the styles of the DAV schools competition and Easters championship. All rounds will be secret topics with 30 minutes preparation time, with 45 minutes in the first round. There will be four preliminary rounds of debating that are all power paired. Following this are two finals series: Open and Novice divisions. The top 4 teams will break to the Open Finals Series which will consist of Semi and Grand Finals. The top 4 novice teams outside of the top 4 will break to the Novice Finals Series consisting of Semi and Grand Finals.
A novice team is a team where all three speakers are novices. A novice is anyone who has not debated at two Easters Championships, an Australasian Championships or broken at Easters..
Teams:
There are no restrictions on teams. They can consist of zero to three novice debaters. Keep in mind that if you want to be eligible for the Novice Finals series your team must be comprised entirely of novices. If you don't have a team of three feel free to register individually or in pairs and you will be allocated to a team.
Adjudicators:
Adjudicators are in high demand for the President's Cup, and will get a discount for the tournament. This tournament also provides a unique opportunity to adjudicate debaters who aren't still doing their VCE.
Cost:
The cost of the tournament will be $40 for debaters and $25 for adjudicators. This price is inclusive of the debating, morning and afternoon teas, entry to both social functions and prizes. The tournament costs will be collected on Saturday morning when you are signed in. If you are not a member of the DAV, please add $10.
