| The A Grade Competition was the premier adult debating competition in Australia. It brought together Victoria’s most accomplished adult debaters in competition for The Age Shield. The A Grade Competition hails to the 1950s, when speakers such as Geoffrey Blainey and Bob Santamaria occupied the DAV stage. The most infamous team of the era was a Pentridge Prison team, coached and captained by a Melbourne media personality who was doing time. In subsequent years, the competition has featured prominent Australians such as Sir Phillip Lynch and Professor Greg Craven. A Grade has been home to some of Australia’s best debaters, Mollie Missen, Alan Swanwick, Martin Sorensen and Ben Richards a few that spring to mind.
