Do adjudicators get paid?
The payment for adjudicating a night (usually two debates) in the Schools Comp or Junior Schools Program is $40. Adjudicators are required for two hours each night.
After a few years adjudicating, you may be approved for External Adjudications, for affiliated competitions. These are often intensive, running for a full day, and pay more than $100.
What is the Free Night?
Your membership is quite expensive to the DAV - it includes various chunky mailouts, the cost of cheques, printed materials supplied at debating nights, office upkeep etc. Since $50 is too much to ask in an upfront membership fee, we ask for $10 upfront, and don't pay for your first adjudication. Most adjudicators do more than 10 nights per year, at $40 each, so the 'free night' isn't terribly onerous. It also helps encourage people to adjudicate more than once!
Do I have to pay GST?
Adjudicators are not DAV employees or contractors: we do not take tax out of your payments.
We require you to supply a "Hobbyist Declaration" (ATO NAT3346). Tick the first box to indicate that "supply is made to [the DAV] in my capacity as an individual, and the supply is made in the course of an activity that is a private recreational pursuit or hobby."
You must provide us with one of these before we can pay you. Please print it out and post it to the Debaters Association Victoria (PO Box 2125, Royal Melb Hospital, 3050). |
